TODAYS HEROES, TOMORROWS ZEROES
Dear P.B.A. Member,
As you are aware, a P.B.A. election is underway. We would like to make you aware that in the last 15 years retirees and their families have obtained 13 years of Zeroes. These Zeroes for Heroes will continue for you and your family if YOU don't do something about it in the next election.
What do you want for you and your family after you retire?
1) The PBA is not legally required to represent or speak for retired members. Several pieces of legislature have failed over the past couple of years because of the actions of the past PBA Attorneys. This legislature would have been helpful to retirees.
2) Health & Welfare benefits are reduced by inflation every year.
3) Retired Officers, like yourself once hailed as heroes, became zeroes because they were disabled doing the job you do everyday. The heroes have been given ZERO increases 13 out of the last 15 years.
4) The "Defined Comp" or "V.S.F." was created because the PBA and the City, knew it was impossible for retired HEROES to live on the increases for retirees, which came about once every decade.
5) While disability pensions are described as being the "jackpot", many retirees on disability pensions are eligible for food stamps because of injuries sustained while they were young, and early in their careers. With no C.O.L.A. buying power immediately diminish.
6) Presently with retirement comes reduction in pay as well as benefits. This includes glasses prescription, increase deductible for dental and other essential services, during the time you need them most. When a slate comes to your Pct or meeting to tell you what they are going to do for you, ask what they are going to do for you when YOU are retired.
Don't accept "the laws say the PBA can't help retirees" NO ONE IN ALBANY OR CITY HALL WILL FAULT YOUR UNION FOR HELPING RETIREES. The City and PBA are aware that disability pensions and benefits diminish after 5 years, this is why when high profile Officers are shot in the line of duty, the City "carries them". We commend this charity but realize that it takes place because it would be an embarrassment if the media wrote about a hero who is surviving on welfare.
We make the following recommendation. Before you become satisfied with your slate:
1) Ask what their agenda is to create a permanent Cost Of Living Adjustment (COLA) for you and your family in the event of ordinary or disability retirement.
2) Ask what efforts are being made to secure legislature that will allow for yearly increases to the Health and Welfare Retirement Fund for you and your family.
3) Ask what their plan is to make the VSF/DEFINED comp equitable for ALL retirees.
4) Send the slates formal written plan to us and we'll put it on our web-page. After the election we'll tell you what has been said and what they have done. Our page will update you on their activity.
5) If this page or a copy is included in candidate's election literature, please tell us. We'd like to put that on our web-site.
6) Ask your slate to make this platform of the "Retirees Doctrine" their own. MAKE THIS THE YEAR YOU VOTED FOR THE SECURITY FOR YOUR FAMILIES AS WELL AS YESTERDAYS HEROES TELL YOUR PBA YOU WANT SECURITY FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY, TODAY, TOMORROW AND DURING YOUR RETIREMENT, TELL YOUR FAMILY YOU WANT BETTER FOR THEM THEN WHAT HAS BEEN GIVEN TO THE ONES THEY CALLED "HEROES" YESTERDAY
